STGC Starts Manning Cup Campaign against Tarrant

St. George’s College will start their Manning Cup campaign this Monday against Tarrant High at Winchester Park.

The Georgians are a young side with a splatter of older players in their ranks. Good leadership is expected from senior players Arsenio Hamilton, Cheva Denton, Matthew Wilson(Captain) and ace striker Akeem Robotham.

Additionally, we have a crop of younger but talented players who, from pre-season displays, seem capable of making a real impact. That was pre-season. We now come to the real deal.

The team seem balanced with a bench with quality especially in the mid field department. The unpredictability comes when we play high intensity matches, on pitches with poor surfaces and with the weather. It appears that the weather condition may become unpredictable earlier than the late October/ December period when we inevitably get disruptions. In these settings, the team has to maintain the discipline and rely on their intense preparation.

Tarrant is not expected to pose much of a problem for the Georgians. The real challenge in the zone will come from Denham Town, a real threat and to a lesser extent St. Catherine High.

So, let the competition begin!

Come out and cheer on the Light Blues this Monday. Match starts at 3:00 pm.

Roper Cup 2017.... Manning Cup: STGC(2) vs KC(1)

Well, the young Georgians again got the better of Kingston College in the main Manning Cup bout this afternoon and earned the respect of the fair size crowd that watched the game.

KC came out on top in the final analysis.

The results were as follows:

U 14 - KC(3) vs STGC(0)
U 16 - KC(2) vs STGC(1)
U 35 – KC(5) vs STGC(0)
O 35 – KC(0) vs STGC(1)
Manning Cup- KC(1) vs STGC(2)

In the feature game the STGC team came out looking confident from the start. Both sides settled down early but it was the Georgians that drew first blood when the pacey Jamali Pusey dribbled down the right flank, beating his marker to find himself with the wide open goal. He easily slotted home the goal.

The Georgians continued to match their more touted opponents stride for stride but later down in the half, a big mix up in our defense allowed the KC striker to get hold of a wayward ball. He scored from close range.

At this point, the Purples took charge of proceedings and made a number of threatening attacks on the Light Blues goal. Poor shooting from the Purples and tough, sometimes desperate defending kept the score level.

In the second half, the Georgians again took charge and looked very threatening in attack. Akeem Robotham got a glorious close range chance but was denied by the keeper. KC, mindful of their favorite status tried to assert themselves but found this difficult as the Georgians looked very dangerous moving forward.

The deadlock would be broken midway in the second half when Akeem Robotham got hold for a loose ball from the KC defense. With the KC goalkeeper hopelessly out of position, Akeem cleverly lobbed the ball over the head of the keeper from outside the penalty area to score.

Akeem about to lob and score...

With fifteen minutes to go, KC now went into full throttle but the Light Blues weren’t going to give up the lead so easily. We continued to look very threatening on the counter and defended well when KC came forward. At this point, the game swung from end to end.

And so, the feeling is that the young Georgians are showing they could be in the leading pack; no big brand name players but a group of young talent ready to be molded into an effective unit.

Again, early days yet but we look on with intriguing interest.

Roper Cup 2017

Kingston College will host the 2017 Roper Cup at Stadium East this Saturday, 26 August.

It will be an interesting matchup as Kingston College will be going all out to avenge the 3-0 beaten they received a few weeks ago in the STGC Invitational.

Most ‘experts’ feel that Kingston College is the favorite for taking the Manning Cup this year. They have essentially an unchanged quality side from last year. So it will be a good experience for the young Georgians to see how they match up later down in the preparation period. The Georgians are a young and inexperienced but quite talented.

Coach Bell will be keen to see how they respond in a fairly high pressure game.

The day’s action will start at 10:00 am with the U 14 teams matching up.

STGC Honors Cricketers

STGC Honors Cricketers

It was a pleasant get-together last Tuesday, 4 July, 2017 as some of the STGC cricketers were in attendance for the school’s ceremony to acknowledge the achievement of our cricketers in the 2016-17 season. With school on holiday and some of the players away either on vacation or on national cricket duties, it was indeed a happy occasion for the small group of players who were present.
