175 Years

Of Success & Counting

1850
Founded
The school was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1850
21 Spanish Jesuits, exiled from Colombia, established St. George's Colonial College as Jamaica's first secondary institution for classical and scientific education.

The school taught subjects like Latin, Greek, French, English, Mathematics, Logic, and Metaphysics to its first 38 day students and 30 boarders.
1894
Jesuit Succession

After just two years, the Spanish Jesuits departed, and the school was handed over to the English Jesuits, who later transferred the mission to the American Province of Maryland-New York in 1894.

1956
Government Aid

The College became a Grant-in-Aid school, integrating into the Jamaican Government's educational system by accepting government funding for staff salaries in exchange for some control.

STGC began using the government's Common Entrance examination in 1956, later replaced by the GSAT in 1990, to ensure student selection was aligned with government policies.

2005
Co-education

The school expanded its co-educational approach by opening its Sixth Form (pre-university) program to female students.

2025
175th Year Celebration

Students participated in Mass, sports and competitions, and creative showcases - all anchored in our timeless motto: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam - For the Greater Glory of God.

Today
Present Day
